Today, we spent most of the day with the graduates of Vipingo. We took the graduates to Vallerye McMillian High School where they will continue their education. The high school is a new facility. We were taken on a tour of the high school by the junior class students. As we toured the high school with the students, we noticed out graduates were nervous and a bit shy because not all people get to attend high school. It is such a big deal here in Kenya for a child to attend high school. It is equivalent to our children in college.
After the tour of the high school, we took the students to Domino’s Pizza for lunch. This was not going to be a regular visit to Domino’s pizza. The team had arranged for the graduates to make their own pizza’s. Most of the students had never tasted pizza. Domino’s pizza was very kind to allow us to come in and make over 40 individual pizzas with the help of the pizza staff. It was a blessing to see the students make their own pizza and see them smile and laugh. Some of the students thought the pizza was very sweet while others thought it was delicious.
After returning back to the Vipingo Campus, the Team prepared the next period of instruction: Self Defense Class! The graduating students were shown several techniques that would allow them opportunities to escape potentially threatening situations. The girls, at first, seemed very hesitant to participate in the activities. But after some rapport building, the girls warmed up and the fight was on. The boys took to the self-defense class like a fish to water. Often times the instructors had to calm the students down because they were getting very excited.
All in all today was a very profitable day. We spent quality time with the graduates and shared our life experiences with them. We are very proud of our graduates.
